Southeast Alaska also known as the ‘Panhandle” consists of the Alexander Archipelago, a 400 mile long maze of 1000 massive and tiny isles, along with a 30 mile wide sliver of mainland. The 1,000 mile passage of water starting from British Columbia, Canada to the top of Southeast Alaska is Alaska’s best kept secret. Quaint native fishing villages, porpoises, humpback and killer whales, eagles, sea lions, and eagles thrive in this land and seascape.

Charter Fishing

At the southernmost end, the passage is protected by Vancouver Island, specifically the Queen Charlotte Islands. This protection from the North Pacific winds and weather that could otherwise threaten all but the toughest vessel offer calmer seas for the Inside Passage. Fishing conditions are superb for this very reason. King Salmon will reach well over 50 lbs! Southeast Alaska fishing is most noted for the Coho/Silver Salmon, Sockeye/Red Salmon, Halibut, and Ling Cod.

Remember the key to any successful fishing trip is local knowledge of the area. When planning a charter fishing trip, inquire into the experience of the Alaskan guide, what the package includes, what type of boat you will be using (For a more detail list, click on this link)

River Fishing

Salmon return in large numbers to thousands of streams in Southeast Alaska. Rainbow, cutthroat, brook and steelhead trout are also available in some freshwater stream systems. Grayling, kokanee and Dolly varden are also fished for in Southeast Alaska. River fishing for steelhead is an experience you won’t forget. It is estimated that over 330 streams support wild steelhead for this region. Averaging 7000 steelhead a year, the Situk River in Yakuat has the largest run of steelhead and it considered one of the most productive rivers in Southeast, Alaska. All five species of Pacific salmon, spring and fall runs of steelhead trout, resident rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden are present in this system.

It is highly recommended to hire a guide on rivers as they are trained in backcountry/survival skills. Rain can dramatically increase water levels making it dangerous for the sole angler.
